German García Family

Elena, her husband German and their four-year-old son, German Jr. have moved into their newly built Habitat home just a month and a half ago. German is a policeman and Elena is currently a homemaker.

The family has wanted a home of their own for several years. Elena shared with us, “we wanted a home of our own because we wanted a space for our son to grow that was ours and where we would not spend all our funds on rent.” Her favorite thing about the new house is “everything”  Elena says, “it took just one month to built the house and we are very happy with how it looks now,” the couple even have plans to paint the house once they save a bit more money to do so.

Elena has many memories of the volunteers, saying, “they were very kind. I remember from the first moment that they were very caring. When they left, I was very sad, they are very good people.” The family send this heartfelt message, to the group that came to help them: “thanks to your help, the house went up quickly and we hope and wish you so much success. I talk to my husband about how grateful I am. My son also remembers you always and asks about you. I hope that God blesses you and that you know that we always carry you in our hearts.”

Sheila Alvarado Family

Sheila, her husband Jorge and son, Alexis (4) live in Baja Vera Paz. Jorge is a distributor, and she is a homemaker, taking care of Alexis during the day.

The couple have been in their current Habitat home for a year now. The house sits adjacent to the home of Sheila’s mother. Prior to building their home, the family was renting and when Sheila and Jorge found the program through Habitat, it was Sheila’s mother who gifted her a plot of land so they could build their home.

Sheila shares, “we really wanted this home because we wanted to put our money into something that is ours, rather than using that money to pay rent for a house that would never be our own.” It is apparent how Sheila feels. When asked, “how do you feel having your own house?” She responds, “staying in a house that is not your own is not the same, now we feel so happy! We are so grateful to God for my mom and for the opportunity to build with Habitat because now what we have is truly our own.”

When asked about her plans for the home, she says: “We’re thinking about fencing the house, but much later, for now we are just enjoying it, I love everything about this house, it is ours, and here I am very happy.”

Of the group of volunteers, Sheila remembers, “they were very kind, helpful and did not hesitate to help and work alongside my family and the builders.” Sheila still has a photo of the group and shares, “I’m so grateful to know you, for the company that you came and gave and for your friendship, to come so far and to help us here in Guatemala. We care so much for you all and hope you are very well.”

Amanda López Family

Amanda, her husband Valentin and their son Jefferson (12) and daughter Glenda Elizabeth (10) have lived in their newly constructed Habitat house for 6 months now. Prior to building their house, the family lived on the same property but the house was small and housed their family of seven, including two adult children and their spouses. Amanda and Valentin recognized the family’s need for space and with the extra land around their house, built a house for themselves and their two young children and also gifted space to her daughter Sheila, to build as well.

Valentin works at a tire shop while Amanda sells fruits nearby the house. Amanda says “it is nice to have our space here.” The new house has two bedrooms and a kitchen, enough room for beds for Glenda and Jefferson and a room for Amanda and Valentin. The family have plans to expand the house in the next few years, “our dream for the house is to put a garden in the front, and a corridor, and eventually, a second level to the house, with more space for the family,” says Amanda.

Amanda remembers fondly the  group of volunteers, who came to help with the construction, “we were happy and got along well, they were hardworking and were a large group. There was a part of the group who worked on my daughters house and another part of the group who worked on mine, it was nice how everyone got along.” Amanda still talks with her daughter, Sheila, about the hard work and says: “you came to lift your hands and to help, thank you, it was a beautiful chance to meet and to know you and to work together.”

María Elena Calo Family

Maria Elena, her husband, Concepcion, and daughter Allison (6) have lived in their Habitat home for 2 years now. Prior to their Habitat home, they had lived with Maria’s parents for six years. “The difference is here we feel more comfortable and there is more space, it is much better than living in one bedroom,” says Maria Elena. “I feel happy and content to have what we have because we are adding to the home little by little, and it is ours.”

When asked what she likes best about her new house, Maria Elena shares, “the walls, here we feel less heat, it is very cool. I like that the bathroom is inside the house instead of outside. We had to leave to go outside at night. Now there is no danger to use the bathroom.”

When asked what changes the family would like to see, Maria Elena says, “we have plans to make the house bigger and to paint it, but all of that in time.” The family also raises chickens. “I love having the chickens here, with the animals, I feel less alone, because Allison is at school, while my husband is at work, taking care of them gives me something to do,” says Maria Elena. Her husband, Concepcion is a traffic police and Allison is now in the first grade.

Of the group of volunteers, Maria Elena remembers them well. Maria has photos of the group and remembers how kind they were. “They were a big group and came from different states, I am grateful because it was a great help. They helped to put the house up so quickly and they came with so many different skills, and other ways of thinking,” she continues; “the joy, the happiness that they came with has stayed in the house. It was a great joy to meet and know you, I wish you many blessings.”

Nelver and Norma have been married for 2 and a half years. Each year of their marriage, the couple have received a new blessing. In their first year of marriage, they found out they were expecting their first child, a daughter, now 15 months old, whom they named Emily. In their second year, the couple discovered they were expecting their second child, a son, whom they named Nehemias, now 2 months old.

With their family continuing to grow, the couple decided it was time to move but had limited means to do so. Prior to their Habitat home, the family rented a bedroom in the house of another family. They had a bathroom, and a bedroom and improvised a kitchen in their bedroom to have some privacy. Just before the birth of Nehemias, the couple agreed that it was time to consider getting a home of their own.

Norma works in the local municipality and Nelver is a national policeman. The family have lived in in their new Habitat home for two months now. “We love the house because it is our own,” says Nelver, “here we have tranquility and quiet. We like our neighbors and live in peace, because of this, there is more love in our house and it is a good feeling.” Norma adds “Everything from the roof, the walls, everything is ours. To live here, in peace with our family and to make our own decisions is the part that I like most.”

When asked about their future in this house, the couple says they have many plans. Nelver has experience in carpentry and in his spare time says “I plan to build some of the furniture to fill the house.” One of Nelver’s recent projects was building a wooden addition behind the house where they house the kitchen. By putting the kitchen outside, the family has more rooms inside the house to use for bedrooms. For Norma, she smiles and says, “I want decorate and paint the house to make it a style of our own.”

The family is so grateful to the group of volunteers who came. “We had a special experience and cannot forget those who came from so far to help our family to build this home. Here we are content and want to thank you for making it possible.”

For Yolanda, her favorite part of the house is:  “todo, everything in this new house is my favorite.” Bayron agrees, “it is the ample space that we have here that I like most about this house, because the other house was so small,” she continues,  “with the new house we feel more at home.” As for plans in the future, the couple plans to paint and face the house.

Of the volunteers, the couple had this to share: “they were helpful and I enjoyed that they came to work with and to help us,” says Bayron, “I was at work most of the days while Yolanda was with them group. Bayron works as a carpenter and Yolanda creates and decorates ceramic pottery from home, which gives her more flexibility during the days time.

To the group, the couple says, “thank you for coming and working with us, we know you came from far and are so grateful that you came to be of help to us. Even the builders were sad when you left and so were we. Now we have this house and we hope that you will come back and see us again. The Sical Family

Edy and Jennifer live with their son Carlos (1) in the town of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. The couple have lived in their Habitat home for 3 months now Jennifer is licensed in Translation and currently works as a physical education teacher while she is completing her studies simultaneously in Physical Education. Edy studies Agronomic Engineering and will finish his studies next year.

The couple wanted their own space because they were expecting their first child, and wanted to create a family nuclear unit for themselves, apart from their parent’s homes. ¨Our parents have helped us a lot and we wanted to give the baby stability and a life where we were independent,” says Jennifer.  The couple alternated between the home of Edy’s parents, which had enough space for them, but was far from both their jobs and the university where they study, and the home of Jennifer´s mother, which had limited space, but allowed them a closer proximity to their work and studies.

Despite, the constant flux of their living situation ¨having the baby on the way became a motivation. says Edy. ´´We spoke with Habitat and were able to do the paperwork in 15 days, the house was built in exactly 40 day afterwards,¨ say Jennifer.

“To have our own home has been a beautiful experience,” says Edy, “It feels beautiful, to see that after my wife and I have lived together in the homes of our parents for the past two years that we now have a stable home.”

When asked about their favorite part of the home, “the kitchen” says Jennifer, “I grew up cooking for my siblings and to this day I love cooking, it’s one of my favorite things to do, so to have the space to do what I love is marvelous,” she continues, “the space we have in the house is also beautiful, we have all our basic needs met here.”

About their future plans for the house: “we have a lot of plans,” says Edy, “first, one of the plans that we have is to finish the yardwork at the entrance.”  The couple is currently putting a wall that will circle the house. “This week, the builders are here putting in the columns and will put up the block wall.”After that, we definitely want plant a garden and some more trees, put a pila outside to wash our clothes and bring the dog home. “I have my dog, but he is at my mother’s home until we can finish putting the fence up,¨ Jennifer shares.

The couple remember very well the group of volunteers who came to build their house with them. “It was a beautiful experience, they were kind, friendly, and they enjoyed interacting with us and with my in-laws. On the last day, they got a piñata, to celebrate and children from all over the neighborhood came—the children were so happy to eat the sweets and meet the group who came from abroad” says Jennifer, “we stay in touch with a few of the volunteers and they will ask from time to time about the progress of the house, it’s nice, we share pictures and are able to catch up; we always check in.”

To the group Edy and Jennifer send this message: “We are incredibly grateful, for how you all helped us from the beginning of this project, we send you many blessings and wish you much success in your projects and everything that you do.”
